About The Network

The North West Paediatric Neurosciences Network was established in August 2014.  This was in response to the ‘Safe and Sustainable Neurosurgical Review’ and subsequent documents:

  • Children’s Neuroscience Networks (for the Neurosurgical child):A Framework for services in England – February 2012
  • Children’s Neuroscience Networks (for the Neurosurgical child): Specification Standards – February 2012

NHS England

NHS England Commissions all services provided by specialised paediatric neurosciences centres.  Nationally there are about 4,500 children each year have neurosurgical interventions.

There are 18 specialised centres in England, with 2 of the Paediatric Hospitals being located in the North West, forming the Paediatric Neurosciences Network.  NHS England has services specifications in place for:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Neurology
  • Neurodisability
  • Neurorehabilitation
  • Epilepsy Surgery

Further information can be found on https://www.england.nhs.uk/

In 2019, the Network was informed that funding which supported the infrastructure would cease from April 2020.  However, both AHCH & RMCH Executive and Clinical Teams recognised the importance of continuing to work collaboratively across the North West.  Therefore, the work will continue to improve and develop services for children and families.
